🇯🇵 Japan Aging, Long-Term Care & Community Support Knowledge Hub

Japan’s long-term care and community support systems continue to evolve as the country responds to population aging, workforce shortages, increasing complexity of need, rural service pressures and growing expectations around prevention, independence and healthy longevity. The first collection within this Knowledge Hub explores Japan Aging, Long-Term Care & Community Support, with additional specialist collections being introduced as the library expands. Japan’s experience offers important insight into how advanced economies can strengthen community-based support, integrate health and long-term care, use technology responsibly and help older people remain connected to their homes and communities.

This Knowledge Hub has been created to examine Japanese approaches to long-term care insurance, community-based integrated care, aging in place, dementia support, workforce development, preventive services, digital innovation and system sustainability. It forms part of the wider International Knowledge Hub within Impact Insights Hub, providing practical insight for providers, policymakers, researchers, health systems, technology developers and community care leaders interested in the future of aging and long-term support.

Japan operates a distinctive national long-term care framework supported by locally organized services and a strong emphasis on prevention, rehabilitation, community participation and coordinated support. As this section develops, articles will examine integrated care systems, municipal planning, home and community services, residential care, family caregiving, rural aging, workforce innovation, assistive technology, robotics, dementia-inclusive communities, quality assurance, outcomes measurement and emerging models of care.

The Knowledge Hub will also explore the wider international relevance of Japan’s experience. Many countries are confronting similar pressures involving demographic change, workforce capacity, rising demand, fragmented services and the financial sustainability of long-term care. Japan provides valuable lessons about what can be achieved through national policy, local coordination, community infrastructure, technological innovation and a sustained focus on supporting independence.

Although this Knowledge Hub is currently in its early stages, it has been designed to expand progressively into one of the largest English-language knowledge libraries focused on Japanese aging, long-term care and community support. New content will be added across multiple specialist subject areas over time, creating a practical and forward-looking resource for leaders seeking to understand both Japan’s care system and its wider international significance.
