Uruguay has become an important international example of care-system development through its efforts to recognise care as a social right and build a coordinated national approach to long-term support. The first collection within this Knowledge Hub explores Uruguay Aging, Long-Term Care & Community Support, with additional specialist collections planned as the library expands.

This Knowledge Hub examines how Uruguay can respond to population aging, changing patterns of dependency and evolving family structures while protecting autonomy, dignity, participation and quality of life. It explores the connections between the Sistema Nacional Integrado de Cuidados (SNIC), health services, social protection, personal assistance, community provision, residential care, families and the paid and unpaid care workforce.

Uruguay's care reforms provide a distinctive foundation for this discussion. The development of the Integrated National Care System moved care more firmly into public policy, while the Plan Nacional de Cuidados 2026–2030 provides a new framework for extending access, strengthening quality, developing the workforce and improving shared responsibility, information and accountability.

Aging at home and community support will be central themes throughout the collection. Sustainable support can depend on personal assistance, healthcare, rehabilitation, accessible housing, family capacity, telecare, assistive technology and community networks. The series will also examine how Uruguay can strengthen coordination between health and social support as people's needs become more complex.

Workforce, quality and sustainability will provide further areas of focus. Articles will explore family caregiving, professionalisation of care work, safeguarding, person-centred support, financing, governance and territorial inequalities, alongside the opportunities and risks created by digital technology, data analytics and artificial intelligence.

As the Knowledge Hub expands, articles will examine demographic change, dependency assessment, personal assistance, telecare, aging at home, residential care, disability, dementia, mental health, unpaid caregiving, workforce development, quality assurance, safeguarding, integrated care, prevention, digital transformation, data intelligence, financing, governance, outcomes and international learning.

The collection will develop progressively into a substantial English-language resource on Uruguay's changing care landscape, culminating in an examination of the future of social care in Uruguay and the prospects for a more universal, sustainable, integrated and person-centred system.
